The 2002 UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination displayed a balanced yet slightly science-oriented tilt, with Science & Technology alone accounting for 38 out of 147 questions (nearly 26%). Geography (23) and the Indian Economy (25) together formed another major chunk. In contrast, the combined weight of Ancient, Medieval and Modern History stood at 20 questions, signalling a relative down-shift for pure history when compared with the late-1990s papers. Candidates who kept abreast of contemporary developments were rewarded, as Current Affairs and Polity together contributed 32 questions, many of which revolved around WTO negotiations, early e-governance initiatives and constitutional amendments of the late 1990s.
Difficulty-wise, the paper leaned toward the moderate side: 79 questions were tagged moderate, 62 easy and only 6 genuinely difficult. The tough items appeared mostly in advanced physics (laser applications), tricky economic indices and obscure medieval treaties. A noticeable pattern was the examiner’s preference for conceptual clarity over rote: instead of asking the year a law was passed, the paper probed its core provision; rather than seeking a planet’s diameter, it asked about its orbital resonance.
Among the surprises was the marginal presence of Environment & Ecology (just 3 questions) despite the 2001 Biodiversity Act being in news—an unexpected respite for many. Conversely, the high share of technology questions foreshadowed the IT-centred focus that would intensify in later years. Overall, aspirants with an integrated preparation strategy—linking current developments to fundamental concepts—found the 2002 paper approachable, while those relying solely on static facts encountered pitfalls.
