Every one of the UPPSC questions on this site is written up like this: the correct option, why it is correct, and why each tempting wrong option is wrong. This is question 1 from the UPPSC 2025 paper.
Which of the following pairs is/are correctly matched ? (Coal Producing Area) - (State) 1. Maolong - Arunachal Pradesh 2. Raniganj - West Bengal 3. Ramgarh - Jharkhand 4. Talcher - Odisha Select the correct answer from the code given below :
Correct: C, Only 2, 3 and 4. Three of the four pairs hold. Raniganj is in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, on the western bank of the Damodar: this is where Indian commercial coal mining began in 1774 under John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company. Ramgarh Coalfield lies in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, in the same Damodar basin, and has been worked by Central Coalfields Limited since 1975. Talcher is in Angul district of Odisha, in the Mahanadi valley, and is mined by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. Only pair 1 fails, and it fails on the State: Arunachal Pradesh's coal is the Namchik–Namphuk field of Changlang district, not 'Maolong': Maolong (Mawlong) belongs to the Tertiary coal belt of the North-East's other coal state, Meghalaya. Drop pair 1 and you are left with 2, 3 and 4.
It keeps the one pair that is wrong (Maolong is not an Arunachal Pradesh coalfield) and throws away two that are right: Ramgarh–Jharkhand and Talcher–Odisha are both standard, uncontested pairs.
Right about Raniganj and Ramgarh, but it still carries the faulty Maolong–Arunachal Pradesh pair and drops Talcher–Odisha, which is correct: Talcher sits in the Mahanadi valley in Angul district of Odisha.

The correct option on every one of the 1,050 solved UPPSC questions is taken from the final answer key published by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, not from our reading of the question. Where the commission cancelled a question or awarded grace marks, the paper says so rather than quietly printing one answer.

Across the 7 papers we have solved (2019–2025), the UPPSC prelims papers carry 1,050 questions in total: an average of about 150 per paper. The exact count for each individual year is listed in the year-wise table on this page.
Partly. UPPSC (UP Provincial Civil Services (PCS)) shares its General Studies backbone with UPSC (polity, modern history, geography, economy and environment all overlap) so those questions are genuine extra practice. The state-specific portion (state history, state geography, state schemes and current affairs) does not appear in UPSC at all, so treat it as UPPSC-only preparation rather than shared revision.
UPPSC is generally less competitive than UPSC on the ratio of candidates to vacancies, but it is not an easier paper in every respect. Its state-specific questions are often narrower and more factual than anything UPSC asks, which rewards a different kind of preparation: depth on one state rather than breadth across India.
