Of the 87 questions set across the UPSC Mains 2026 Essay paper and General Studies Papers I to IV, 86 echoed at least one question UPSC had asked before. All 189 of the 189 past questions cited in this analysis resolve to a specific question in our 2013–2025 archive, so every claim on these pages can be opened and checked. Exactly 1 question had no prior UPSC question at all.
Read that precisely: it says these questions echoed earlier ones, not that they could be answered from them. Compiled 23 August 2026.
These numbers are rough estimates, not measurements. For each question we asked one thing: a student who studied past- year questions, read the basic sources, and practised with DAW and the Simulators, how much of a full answer could that student build? The rest is execution: turning what you know into a written answer, within time, in the exam hall. That too is a skill, and practice builds it. We have kept every number conservative, and none goes above 80 percent, because even a familiar question still has to be written well in the exam hall. For essay topics, the number means how much of the theme and its material was familiar ground. The essay itself is always written fresh in the hall.
| Paper | Questions | Mean within reach | Least familiar question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essay Paper | 8 | about 70% | QA3 · A thorn is a changed bud (60%) |
| GS Paper 1 | 20 | about 74.3% | Q4 · Fujiwhara effect and cyclones (60%) |
| GS Paper 2 | 20 | about 76.5% | Q9 · IPMDA, SAGAR and the Quad (65%) |
| GS Paper 3 | 20 | about 71.5% | Q15 · Mission Drishti satellite (35%) |
| GS Paper 4 | 19 | about 74.2% | Q2(A) · Untested remedy on a tribe (65%) |
Across all 87 questions the mean estimate is about 73.7%. That is an average of estimates, not a measurement.
GS Paper 3 Question 12 — Startups — is the only question in the paper with no earlier UPSC question behind it.
Said honestly: startups have not been asked directly on this paper before. This is a first-time question. What was old is its parts, jobs, innovation and funding, and those were in our practice.
