The 2008 UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination presented aspirants with a paper that, while numerically balanced at the traditional 150-question format, revealed several noteworthy shifts in emphasis. Science & Technology dominated one-third of the paper (50 questions), signalling the Commission’s growing interest in contemporary scientific developments and their applications. Geography followed with 26 questions, maintaining its long-standing weightage, but the surprising element was the relatively light share of Indian Polity (11) and Indian Economy (14) compared with the early-2000s trend where each often crossed the 20-question mark.
Difficulty-wise, the paper tilted decisively toward the easier side: 90 questions were classified as easy, 60 as moderate, and virtually none reached the ‘difficult’ bracket. This meant that cut-off scores rose noticeably that year, rewarding breadth of coverage over depth of niche topics. Current Affairs (17) leaned heavily on 2007’s international events—UN climate talks, financial turbulence in the US sub-prime sector, and India’s civil nuclear negotiations—underscoring the need for a year-round newspaper habit.
Another striking pattern was the near disappearance of Medieval and Ancient History, together contributing only two questions. Art & Culture, often clubbed with history, clocked nine questions, many centred on UNESCO World Heritage Sites and dance forms. Environment & Ecology (10) sustained the momentum set by the 2006-07 Al Gore climate discourse, while Modern History (11) stayed faithful to freedom-struggle personalities.
Overall, 2008 rewarded candidates who maintained a balanced study schedule but placed extra focus on Science & Technology, emerging environmental issues, and the evolving global economic landscape.
