Paper Analysis — 2007
The 2007 UPSC Civil Services Preliminary General Studies paper stood out for its pronounced tilt towards Science & Technology, which contributed 49 of the 147 questions—roughly one-third of the paper. Current Affairs followed with 27 items, signalling the Commission’s growing preference for dynamic, year-specific knowledge. Geography retained its traditional heft with 22 conceptual questions on mapping, soils and climatology. Modern History (13) and Indian Polity (11) offered familiar territory for veterans, while Art & Culture (9) and Environment & Ecology (6) received only token representation compared to later years.
The difficulty profile was unusually candidate-friendly: 75 questions were categorised as ‘easy’, 71 as ‘moderate’ and only a single item breached the ‘difficult’ threshold. With an average stem length of about 26 words and limited use of tricky negative framing, speed was rarely a bottleneck. Aspirants who had revised NCERT science texts, kept abreast of 2006-07 breakthroughs in biotech and IT, and tracked basic economic indicators could comfortably attempt 115-plus questions without excessive risk.
Notable surprises included a mini-cluster on nanotechnology, an early nod to climate-change negotiations, and a lone sports-governance question that hinted at UPSC’s widening current-affairs net. Overall, the 2007 paper rewarded breadth over depth, privileging wide reading and newspaper-based updates rather than niche expertise—a trend that would continue, but with greater balance, in subsequent editions.

Why was Science & Technology so dominant in the 2007 prelims paper?▼
UPSC used the 2007 paper to reflect India’s focus on emerging technologies such as biotechnology, IT and nanoscience. The result was 49 S&T questions, aimed at testing whether candidates could connect basic science concepts with contemporary developments.
Was the 2007 paper easier than other years?▼
Yes. With 75 easy and only 1 difficult question, 2007 is remembered as one of the more approachable papers of the decade. A solid NCERT foundation plus routine newspaper reading was sufficient to attempt a high number of questions safely.
What strategic lessons can be drawn from the 2007 question distribution?▼
The paper underlined the need for breadth and current relevance. Even though core subjects like History and Polity remained important, disproportionate weightage can suddenly shift to areas like S&T. Diversified study plans that include daily current-affairs updates and basic science refreshers are therefore essential.
