This guide covers 121 government, teaching and international routes for UPSC aspirants building a plan B, each linked to a guide that gives its age limit and, where we could confirm it, its attempt rule. Routes that are closed right now are counted at the end, with links to where they are listed.
A workable UPSC backup plan combines a parallel exam that reuses your preparation, an age-proof qualification you can fall back on for years, and a stopping rule you set before the next result.
For most aspirants the parallel exam is a home-state PCS or one of UPSC’s other exams. The age-proof qualification is UGC-NET: its bulletin states there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility.
Of the 96 government routes whose attempts clause we could read, only 4 state a cap. For most of the rest, only the age window limits how often you sit.
UPPSC, MPPSC and RPSC close just before your 40th birthday, not after it. Among the state PCS exams checked, only Haryana’s HCS runs past 40. Bihar stops at 37 for unreserved men and Tamil Nadu’s Group I before 34.
10 routes that look like options had no regular entry-level recruitment an outside candidate could apply to when we checked. They include the UN Young Professionals Programme, which Indian nationals cannot currently enter. The section at the end links to where they are listed, so you do not plan around them.
Ages are for General candidates; most civilian routes give reserved categories more, though CDS carries no category relaxation. Every government route, grouped by age ceiling, is on government exams by age limit.
Several officer entries close in this band — CAPF at 25, CDS at 24 or 25, AFCAT Flying at 24. Take those first.
CSE stays open for General candidates until you turn 32 on its crucial date, 1 August. Build a parallel exam alongside it.
CSE has closed for General candidates. These still run past it.
Fewer routes, and most come with a condition: a Master’s, a B.Ed, a law practice or a job.

Every route sorted by how late it stays open, with the few that cap attempts.

A workable UPSC backup plan has three parts. First, a parallel exam that reuses your preparation, such as your home-state PCS, UPSC's CAPF Assistant Commandant exam or the EPFO recruitment tests. Second, an age-proof qualification — UGC-NET, which has no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility. Third, a stopping rule you set before the next result.
The exams that share the most preparation with UPSC CSE are the Indian Forest Service Examination, whose Prelims is held through the CSE Prelims itself; the state PCS exams that copy UPSC's GS and CSAT structure, such as UPPSC, MPPSC and UKPSC; UPSC's CAPF Assistant Commandant exam, whose Paper-II is General Studies, Essay and Comprehension; and UPSC's EPFO recruitment tests. SSC CGL's General Awareness section also draws on the same reading.
UPPSC, MPPSC and RPSC keep their flagship exams open until just before 40 for General candidates, and Haryana's HCS runs to 42. Others are tighter: Bihar's BPSC stops at 37 for unreserved men, Tamil Nadu's Group I before 34 for candidates outside the reserved communities, and Chhattisgarh at 30 for candidates from other states. Check your home state's current notification rather than assuming 40.
No, though the options narrow and most come with a condition. At 35, UGC-NET for Assistant Professor has no upper age limit; Post Graduate Teacher posts at KVS, NVS and EMRS run to 40; UPPSC, MPPSC and RPSC run until just before 40 and Haryana's HCS to 42; IBPS RRB Officer Scale-III runs until just before 40; and the EPFO Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner recruitment and NABARD Development Assistant run to 35. Advocates with seven years' practice can sit Higher Judicial Service exams from 35 until 45 — until just before the 45th birthday in Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, and through 45 in Punjab and Haryana.
Most of these exams test the general studies you already have. Keep it sharp with timed Prelims practice, or work through real papers from UPSC's other exams.
How we checked: every age limit, attempt rule and eligibility condition was read from the conducting body’s own notification, advertisement or careers page, and each table row on the linked guides links to it. Coaching and aggregator sites were never used as a source. Where a figure could not be verified it is shown as a dash or left out; its absence is not a claim that no limit exists.
