The 2005 Civil Services Preliminary General Studies Paper, consisting of 150 objective questions, presented aspirants with a wide-angled snapshot of the UPSC syllabus. Science and Technology (34 questions) and Geography (30 questions) together contributed more than two-fifths of the paper, underscoring UPSC’s continuing emphasis on concept-driven, application-oriented topics such as biotechnology, satellite geography and climatology. Current Affairs came next with 28 questions that tested awareness of events from mid-2003 to early-2005, including the Asian Tsunami, India’s WTO negotiations and advances in space missions.
The overall difficulty skewed moderate (91 questions), with 54 easy sitters and only 5 truly difficult posers. Many aspirants reported that elimination techniques yielded dividends because options were often asymmetrically framed—for example, two obviously extreme statements plus two nuanced ones—allowing careful readers to narrow choices quickly. Indian Polity (10 questions) stayed largely factual, favouring articles and constitutional amendments rather than tricky doctrine. Economy (16 questions) mixed data-based queries on fiscal trends with conceptual items on WTO and monetary policy.
Notable surprises included a low count for Art and Culture (just 3 questions) and only single representatives from Ancient and Medieval History, reversing the heavier weighting seen in 2004. Environment & Ecology, though only 7 questions, punched above its weight by embedding contemporary twists like Kyoto Protocol mechanisms. Overall, the 2005 paper rewarded breadth over depth, privileging candidates who combined solid static preparation with a six-month current affairs window and quick reasoning under time pressure.
