Tribes & Communities — UPSC Prelims Previous Year Questions

Although only four Prelims questions surfaced between 1995-2013, tribal and community culture remains a low-frequency yet high-return area because the syllabus explicitly mentions ‘tribes’ and ‘folk traditions’. UPSC typically asks you to identify a tribe with its state, dance, festival, hunting tool or PVTG status. Constitutional provisions (Fifth and Sixth Schedule), Forest Rights Act and recent GI tags for tribal crafts can also be linked. Aspirants should map major Scheduled Tribes, Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), and their ecological niches—North-East hills, Central Indian plateau, Andaman & Nicobar islands or Western Ghats. Current affairs—especially resistance to development projects or inclusion in ST list—may suddenly revive this dormant topic, so a concise fact-sheet is indispensable.
