Which of the following statements is not true regarding Walterkrit Rajput Hitkarini Sabha ?
- (1)It was established in the year 1888, by the efforts of colonel C.K.M. Walter.
- (2)It was aimed to make reforms for Rajputs and Dalits of Rajasthan.
- (3)Its first meeting was organized at Ajmer.
- (4)The Sabha made social regulations to achieve its aims.
Answer
Why
Correct — option (2), It was aimed to make reforms for Rajputs and Dalits of Rajasthan.
The question asks for the statement that is not true. Option (2) is that statement: the Sabha's reform work concerned Rajputs and Charans, not Dalits.
The Sahitya Akademi's Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature describes Kesari Singh Barhath as an active member of the Walter-Rajput-Hitakarini Sabha who helped bring about social reforms among the Rajput and Charan communities.
The other three statements stand in RPSC's key. The Sabha was set up in 1888 through the efforts of Colonel C.K.M. Walter, held its first meeting at Ajmer, and framed social regulations to achieve its aims.
D.L. Paliwal's 1956 biography of Barhath gives the same picture: Walter gathered Rajput and Charan nobles at Ajmer in Samvat 1944 (1887–88), and the Sabha made rules on wedding and mourning customs for those two communities.
The idea to remember: the Walterkrit Sabha worked for reform among Rajputs and Charans, under Colonel Walter.
Why the others are wrong
- (1)It was established in the year 1888, by the efforts of colonel C.K.M. Walter. — This statement is true in RPSC's key, so it is not the answer. The Sabha carries Colonel Walter's name. As Agent to the Governor-General for Rajputana, he wrote to the rulers, convened the Sabha and chaired it; Paliwal's biography of Barhath adds that Kaviraja Shyamaldas urged him to start it.
The untrue statement is option (2), which puts Dalits in place of Charans.
- (3)Its first meeting was organized at Ajmer. — This statement is true in RPSC's key, so it is not the answer. The Sabha's first meeting was organised at Ajmer, then a British province within Rajputana.
The untrue statement is option (2), on whom the reforms were meant for.
- (4)The Sabha made social regulations to achieve its aims. — This statement is true in RPSC's key, so it is not the answer. The Sabha pursued reform by framing social regulations for the communities it worked among.
Only option (2) misstates the Sabha, by naming Dalits instead of Charans.
Concept
The Walterkrit Rajput Hitkarini Sabha was a social-reform body in Rajputana, named after Colonel C.K.M. Walter, the Agent to the Governor-General, who chaired it. Its reforms were aimed at the Rajput and Charan communities.
The Charans were the bardic community to which Kesari Singh Barhath himself belonged. The Sabha had branches across the region and held annual conferences.
At a 1905 conference of the Sabha's Kota branch, Barhath proposed that the Sabha be Rajput-controlled and free of British influence, and he pressed for Hindi in its proceedings.
RPSC's 2024 syllabus lists "Agents of Social Awakening in Rajasthan" in the 19th and 20th centuries under "Emergence of Modern Rajasthan".
One of the Sabha's active members moved from social reform to politics. Kesari Singh Barhath (1872–1941), a Charan from Shahpura State, wrote the Dingal verses Chetavani ra Chungatya, credited with dissuading Maharana Fateh Singh from attending the 1903 Delhi Durbar.
Barhath also founded the revolutionary Veer Bharat Sabha and co-founded the Rajasthan Seva Sangh.

Common traps
- Swapping Charans for Dalits: the Sabha's reforms concerned Rajputs and Charans.
- Answering a "not true" question with a true statement: three statements here hold, and the answer is the one that does not.
- Treating the Sabha as a political body from the start: it was a reform organisation, and the call for Rajput control came at a 1905 conference of its Kota branch.
A question can list statements about a reform body, such as its founder, year, first meeting, target communities or methods, and ask which is untrue.
A question can also match nineteenth-century institutions of Rajasthan to their founders or years of establishment.
