Concept
Submarine telecommunications cables are fibre-optic lines laid on the seabed, mostly linking countries and continents. ITU says more than 99% of international data traffic travels over about 500 such cables, spanning over 1.7 million km.
Cables fail: ITU counts an average of 150 to 200 faults reported worldwide each year. Resilience means keeping connectivity alive through those faults.
The Abuja declaration has eleven points. ITU's release highlights three of them: protect cables by identifying and mitigating risks, including natural events and accidental maritime damage; diversify routes and landings so no region is left isolated; and speed up the deployment of new cables and the repair of damaged ones.
RPSC's 2024 syllabus lists "Computers, Information and Communication Technology" under Science & Technology, and "Major Current Events and Issues of Rajasthan, India and International Importance" under Current Affairs. Undersea cables sit where the two lines meet.
ITU is the United Nations agency for information and communication technologies. At Abuja, ICPC Chairman Graham Evans said the summit brought together the global submarine cable industry and governments.
At the summit, the Advisory Body's co-chairs were Bosun Tijani, Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and Prof. Sandra Maximiano, Chair of Portugal's communications regulator ANACOM. Tijani described Nigeria as a key landing point for submarine cables in Africa.
