- (1)A-(iv), B-(iii), C-(ii), D-(i)
- (2)A-(i), B-(ii), C-(iii), D-(iv)
- (3)A-(iii), B-(iv), C-(i), D-(ii)
- (4)A-(ii), B-(iii), C-(iv), D-(i)
Answer
Why
Correct — option (3), A-(iii), B-(iv), C-(i), D-(ii).
The right code is A-(iii), B-(iv), C-(i), D-(ii). Each case is tied to the revolutionaries tried in it.
(A) Howrah Conspiracy case → (iii) Jatindranath Mukherjee. In January 1910, 47 members of the Anushilan Samiti were arrested and tried in Calcutta in the Howrah–Sibpur Conspiracy case. Jatindranath Mukherjee (Bagha Jatin) was among them.
(B) Lahore Conspiracy case → (iv) Rajguru. Rajguru, Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev were tried for the killing of police officer John P. Saunders at Lahore on 17 December 1928, and were hanged at Lahore Central Jail on 23 March 1931.
(C) Delhi Conspiracy case → (i) Master Amir Chand. After a bomb was thrown at Viceroy Lord Hardinge in Delhi on 23 December 1912, the case was brought against Amir Chand, Awadh Behari, Bhai Balmukund, Basanta Kumar Biswas and Lala Hanumant Sahay.
(D) Alipore Conspiracy case → (ii) Arvind Ghosh. Aurobindo Ghosh and his brother Barin Ghosh were among the accused tried at Alipore Sessions Court between May 1908 and May 1909.
Howrah – Jatin Mukherjee; Lahore – Rajguru; Delhi – Amir Chand; Alipore – Aurobindo.
Why the others are wrong
- (1)A-(iv), B-(iii), C-(ii), D-(i) — No pair in this code is correct. It puts Rajguru in the Howrah case, Jatindranath Mukherjee in the Lahore case, Aurobindo Ghosh in the Delhi case and Amir Chand in the Alipore case.
Rajguru belongs to the Lahore case over Saunders's killing, and Amir Chand to the Delhi case over the attack on Hardinge.
- (2)A-(i), B-(ii), C-(iii), D-(iv) — This code simply pairs the lists in printed order, and no pair is correct.
Amir Chand was tried in the Delhi case, not the Howrah case. Aurobindo Ghosh was an accused in the Alipore case, not at Lahore. Jatindranath Mukherjee belongs to the Howrah case, and Rajguru to Lahore.
- (4)A-(ii), B-(iii), C-(iv), D-(i) — No pair in this code is correct. It sends Aurobindo Ghosh to Howrah, Jatindranath Mukherjee to Lahore, Rajguru to Delhi and Amir Chand to Alipore.
The Alipore case of 1908–09 is the one that put Aurobindo Ghosh in the dock; the Howrah–Sibpur case of 1910 is the one linked with Jatindranath Mukherjee.
Concept
Each of these trials put a group of revolutionaries in the dock together as a "conspiracy case", named after a place linked with the trial or the plot.
The Alipore Bomb Case (1908–09) followed the Muzaffarpur attack on Magistrate Kingsford by Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki. The Howrah–Sibpur case (1910) followed the murder of police officer Shamsul Alam. The Delhi case (1912–14) followed the bomb thrown at Lord Hardinge in Chandni Chowk.
Lahore saw more than one conspiracy trial. The first Lahore Conspiracy Case (1915) tried Ghadar revolutionaries; the later one tried Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru and others of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
RPSC's 2021 Prelims syllabus lists "The Freedom Struggle & Indian National Movement- its various stages, streams and important contributors, contributions from different parts of the country." under modern Indian history.
The revolutionary stream ran from Bengal's Anushilan Samiti to the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) of Bhagat Singh and his associates. The trials mark its stages: Bengal in 1908–10, Delhi and Lahore in 1912–15, and Lahore again in 1929–30.

Common traps
- Lahore had more than one conspiracy trial. Rajguru belongs to the later case over Saunders's killing, not to the 1915 Ghadar trial.
- Aurobindo Ghosh and Jatindranath Mukherjee were both Bengal revolutionaries of the same years; the Alipore case (1908–09) and the Howrah case (1910) separate them.
- The Delhi Conspiracy case is also known as the Delhi–Lahore Conspiracy, and the 1912 attack behind it can be named the Hardinge bomb incident (RPSC's 2018 wording), so a stem can use any of these names.
A question can match conspiracy cases to the revolutionaries tried in them, as this one does.
A question can also ask who was not involved in a case, put the cases in chronological order, or ask which event led to a trial.
