(05×04 = 20) (a) Passage: “Even if you go far away, I shall bring freedom to you.” This proclamation belonged to that lion-hearted leader of the Indian National Army. These were the days of the Second World War. One British defeat followed another. The Japanese army was advancing rapidly. It captured Singapore and marched towards the prisoner-of-war camp there. While retreating, many British officers left a large number of Indian soldiers behind. Those men fell into the hands of the Japanese army and were kept in prison camps. Rashbehari Bose was trying to bring these Indian soldiers together and organise them one by one. At that very time Subhash Bose arrived in Rangoon. Inspired by his struggle for freedom, both Burma and Japan came forward with every kind of help. He addressed the soldiers and ordered them to wage a joint war with the Japanese army to throw the British out of India. His arrival infused new life into those soldiers. They were filled with admiration for him and for various other leaders. They were ready to fight unto death for the freedom of their country.
