Tianwen-1 is China's mission to Mars. NASA's space science data catalogue (NSSDCA) describes it as "a Chinese Mars mission comprising a lander/rover and orbiter". It is a spacecraft; NSSDCA lists the China National Space Administration (CNSA) as its funding agency.

Its timeline, as NSSDCA records it:

Launch — 23 July 2020, on a Long March 5 rocket from Wenchang.

Mars orbit — 10 February 2021.

Landing — the lander and rover touched down in the Utopia Planitia region at 23:18 UT on 14 May 2021 (7:18 a.m. on 15 May, Beijing time).

Rover on the surface — the Zhurong rover rolled onto Mars on 22 May 2021.

The idea to remember: Tianwen-1 = China's Mars spacecraft (orbiter + lander + Zhurong rover), not a space station, Moon rover or missile.

Why the others are wrong

  Space Station of China — Tianwen-1 travels to Mars; it is not a station orbiting Earth. The core module of China's space station is Tianhe, which NSSDCA lists as "the core module of the modular Chinese Space Station (CSS)", launched on 29 April 2021 on a Long March 5B.

  Both names begin with "Tian", which makes them easy to confuse.

  Moon rover vehicle of China — Tianwen-1 does carry a rover, Zhurong, but it landed on Mars, not the Moon. China's Moon rovers include Yutu ("Jade Rabbit"), carried by Chang'e 3, and Yutu 2, carried by Chang'e 4.

  Chang'e 4 landed on 3 January 2019, and NSSDCA calls it the first spacecraft to make a controlled landing on the far side of the Moon.

  Inter Continental Missile of China — Tianwen-1 is not a weapon. It rode a Long March 5 launch rocket to space, but the mission itself is scientific.

  NSSDCA lists its aims as studying Martian topography and geology, soil and water-ice, surface composition, the ionosphere and climate, and the planet's gravity, magnetic field and interior.

A planetary mission can combine three parts. An orbiter circles the planet, maps it and relays signals to Earth. A lander brings equipment down to the surface. A rover drives across the surface to study it.

Tianwen-1 carried all three to Mars in one launch. Its orbiter searched for the landing site before the lander and the Zhurong rover separated and landed.

NSSDCA gives the name's meaning: Tianwen means "Questions to Heaven", the title of a poem by Qu Yuan, and Zhurong is named after the Chinese god of fire.
