The Kolkata Metro Railway was later given the status of a zone as well.
Zonal headquarters are pure recall, but they are recall with a structure. Three of the southern zones sit in three different States — South Central at Secunderabad in Telangana, South Western at Hubballi in Karnataka, South East Central at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh — while South Eastern, the oldest of the four, stayed in Kolkata where it was carved out of the Bengal Nagpur Railway. The trap is the pull of geography: South Eastern sounds as though it should be in Odisha, and Bhubaneswar is indeed a zonal headquarters, but of East Coast Railway.
