Where this paper and its answers come from

SSC does not publish CGL question papers or a public answer key. From 2025 the candidate response sheet prints every question and option as a picture, so the text here is transcribed from those pictures for this shift and checked against them independently; where the layout carries meaning, the picture is shown as well. Each answer is the key SSC colour-marked on that sheet. SSC released a tentative key for challenge and later its final one, both only to candidates behind a login, and the sheet does not say which of the two it carries. Iceland lies far to the north, in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Why the others are wrong

Sicily — Sicily is a Mediterranean island and a region of Italy, like Sardinia. Being the largest island in the Mediterranean does not take it out of the group.

Corsica — Corsica is French while Sicily and Sardinia are Italian, but that split leaves Iceland outside too. By sea, Corsica sits with the other two.
(c)
Sardinia — Sardinia is an Italian island in the Mediterranean, just south of Corsica across the Strait of Bonifacio. It belongs firmly to the group of three.

Concept

An odd-one-out item is solved by the grouping that leaves exactly one option outside. Try the obvious features in turn: which sea, which country, what kind of land.

Here the sea decides it. Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica ring the Tyrrhenian Sea, the arm of the Mediterranean off Italy's west coast. Iceland lies in the North Atlantic, just south of the Arctic Circle.

Corsica tempts because it is the French island beside two Italian ones. But grouping by country leaves Iceland outside the Italian pair as well, so that grouping does not single out one island.
