The Global Gender Gap Report primarily measures disparities between genders in which key areas?
- (a)Politics, Economy, Health, Education
- (b)Income, Wealth, Land, Technology
- (c)Crime, Law, Justice, Security
- (d)Environment, Climate, Water, Food
Answer
Why
Correct — A. The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index measures the gap between women and men on four subindexes:
Economic Participation and Opportunity
Educational Attainment
Health and Survival
Political Empowerment
Those are the option's Economy, Education, Health and Politics → option (a).
Why the others are wrong
- (b)Income, Wealth, Land, Technology — Income feeds the economic subindex through estimated earned income, but wealth, land and technology are not subindexes of the index.
- (c)Crime, Law, Justice, Security — Crime, law and security are not scored. The four subindexes are economic participation, education, health and political empowerment.
- (d)Environment, Climate, Water, Food — Environment and climate fall outside the index. The WEF measures gender gaps in economy, education, health and politics, not access to water or food.
Concept
The Global Gender Gap Report has been published by the World Economic Forum since 2006.
It scores the gap between women and men, not their absolute levels: a country with low schooling overall can still score well on education parity.
Scores run from 0 to 1, where 1 means full parity. Recent editions also state them as the percentage of the gap closed.
Do not confuse it with UNDP's Gender Inequality Index, which uses reproductive health, empowerment and the labour market.

Common traps
- Confusing the WEF's Gender Gap Index with UNDP's Gender Inequality Index, which uses reproductive health, empowerment and the labour market.
- Reading the index as a measure of women's absolute welfare: it scores the gap relative to men.
