Where this paper and its answers come from

SSC does not publish CGL question papers or a public answer key. From 2025 the candidate response sheet prints every question and option as a picture, so the text here is transcribed from those pictures for this shift and checked against them independently; where the layout carries meaning, the picture is shown as well. Each answer is the key SSC colour-marked on that sheet. SSC released a tentative key for challenge and later its final one, both only to candidates behind a login, and the sheet does not say which of the two it carries. Why the others are wrong

A-2, B-4, C-3, D-1 — It makes the center back an attacker (3) and dead-time a defensive player (1). Dead-time is a stretch of time, not a player.
(d)
A-4, B-1, C-2, D-3 — It makes the center forward a time interval (4) and dead-time the main attacker (3). A playing position cannot be a stoppage.

Concept

Water polo is played seven a side: six field players and a goalkeeper.

The center forward, also called the hole set or 2-metre player, works close in front of the opposing goal. The center back is the defender set against him. Drivers work from further out and attack by swimming into scoring positions.

Every definition sits in the question, so this is a vocabulary match: forward points to attack, back to defence, and dead-time is the entry that is not a player.

Pairing center back with the attacker because both work near goal. The back is the defender.
Reading driver as the ball-carrier. The definition says the driver moves into position without the ball.
