Where this paper and its answers come from

SSC does not publish CGL question papers or a public answer key. From 2025 the candidate response sheet prints every question and option as a picture, so the text here is transcribed from those pictures for this shift and checked against them independently; where the layout carries meaning, the picture is shown as well. Each answer is the key SSC colour-marked on that sheet. SSC released a tentative key for challenge and later its final one, both only to candidates behind a login, and the sheet does not say which of the two it carries. The solutions are written by UnlockIAS.

X and Y are brothers. Z is the wife of Y. A is the father of X. B is the daughter of Z. How is B related to A?

Why

Correct — B. Place everyone on a family tree, one generation per row.

Rule: a son's daughter is a granddaughter.

A is X's father, and X and Y are brothers → A is Y's father too
Z is Y's wife, and B is Z's daughter → B is Y's daughter
B is the daughter of A's son → granddaughter of A

That is option (b).

Why the others are wrong

Daughter — Daughter would put B one generation below A. B is Y's daughter, and Y is A's son, so B is two generations below.

Niece — Niece is B's relation to X, Y's brother. The question asks about A, the father of both brothers, and to him B is a granddaughter.

Sister — Sister would put B in A's own generation. B is the daughter of A's son, two generations below him.

Concept

Blood-relation statements are easiest as a tree: parents above, children below, spouses side by side. Put A at the top, the brothers X and Y below him, Z beside Y, and B below Y and Z.

Then count generations. B is two below A, through his son Y, so she is his granddaughter.

The item rests on two ordinary assumptions: the brothers share a father, and Z's daughter is also Y's daughter. The key takes both.
