Where this paper and its answers come from

SSC does not publish CGL question papers or a public answer key. From 2025 the candidate response sheet prints every question and option as a picture, so the text here is transcribed from those pictures for this shift and checked against them independently; where the layout carries meaning, the picture is shown as well. Each answer is the key SSC colour-marked on that sheet. SSC released a tentative key for challenge and later its final one, both only to candidates behind a login, and the sheet does not say which of the two it carries. Why

Correct — B. Article 155: the Governor of a State is appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal → option (b).

That is the contrast the stem draws. The President is elected under Article 54 by the elected members of both Houses of Parliament and of the State Legislative Assemblies, while no one votes for a Governor.

Why the others are wrong

Directly elected — No election of any kind, direct or indirect, chooses a Governor. Article 155 makes the office an appointment by the President.

Nominated by Supreme Court — The Supreme Court has no part in choosing a Governor. The judiciary's role is the oath, which the Chief Justice of the State's High Court administers under Article 159.
(d)
Chosen by State Assembly — The State Assembly neither chooses nor removes the Governor. Under Article 156 the Governor holds office during the pleasure of the President.

Concept

The Governor heads a State as the President heads the Union, but the two reach office differently:
President: indirectly elected, Article 54
Governor: appointed by the President, Article 155

A Governor holds office during the pleasure of the President, with a five-year term (Article 156), and must be a citizen of India aged at least 35 (Article 157).

The President acts on the advice of the Union Council of Ministers, so in practice the Union government chooses Governors. That is why the office features in Centre-State debates, including the Sarkaria Commission's advice on appointment and removal.
