Correct — A, Unified Payment Interface. UPI is India's instant payment system, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. Its pilot was launched on 11 April 2016 in Mumbai by Dr Raghuram G. Rajan, then Governor of the RBI, with 21 member banks taking part, and the major banks made UPI-enabled apps available to customers from August 2016. Each word of the name describes something real about the system. 'Unified' is the key one: UPI is a single interface that sits on top of the existing Immediate Payment Service and lets a user operate several bank accounts from one application, so payments no longer have to be routed through the app of the bank that holds the money. 'Payment' covers both directions it supports — person-to-person and person-to-merchant. 'Interface' is precise rather than decorative: UPI is not an app or a wallet but an open application programming interface that any bank or provider can build on, which is why dozens of unrelated apps can all move money over the same rails. A user needs only a virtual payment address — the UPI ID — instead of an account number and IFSC code. The other three expansions correspond to nothing in NPCI or RBI usage; they are invented strings assembled from plausible banking words.

Why the other options are wrong — (b) Swaps the operative word: 'united' for 'unified', and 'initiation' for 'interface'. Neither substitution is trivial. 'Unified' names what the system actually does — bring many bank accounts under one interface — and 'interface' names what it is, a programming interface rather than an application. Concept: The National Payments Corporation of India is the umbrella organisation for retail payments in the country, set up at the initiative of the Reserve Bank and the Indian Banks' Association, and it operates most of the systems an Indian uses daily: RuPay cards, the Immediate Payment Service, the National Automated Clearing House, the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System, the BHIM app, National Electronic Toll Collection behind FASTag, and UPI. UPI's design is what made it spread. Because it runs as an open interface over IMPS, any bank or third-party app can plug in; because it uses a virtual payment address, the payer never needs the payee's account number; and because settlement happens between bank accounts directly, no money has to be pre-loaded into a wallet — which is exactly why UPSC once asked what the most likely consequence of UPI would be and keyed it to mobile wallets becoming unnecessary. Later additions extended the same rails: BHIM as a reference app, UPI 2.0, UPI Lite for small offline payments and UPI 123PAY for feature phones, along with international linkages that let UPI payments be made outside India.
