Which of the following Ramsar wetland site is/are NOT situated in Uttar Pradesh ? 1. Sarsai Nawar Jheel 2. Samaspur Bird Sanctuary 3. Rudrasagar Lake 4. Sultanpur National Park Select the correct answer from the code given below :
- (a)1 and 3
- (b)2 and 3
- (c)3 and 4
- (d)1 and 2
Correct — C, 3 and 4 — Rudrasagar Lake and Sultanpur National Park. Rudrasagar Lake (also called Twijilikma), the reservoir on which the Neermahal water palace stands, is in Sepahijala district of TRIPURA and has been a Ramsar site since 8 November 2005. Sultanpur National Park is in Gurugram district of HARYANA and was designated a Ramsar site on 25 May 2021 — its name is the trap, because Sultanpur is also the name of a district in Uttar Pradesh, but the national park has nothing to do with it. The other two are genuinely Uttar Pradesh wetlands: Sarsai Nawar Jheel in Etawah district (designated 19 September 2019) and Samaspur Bird Sanctuary in Rae Bareli district (designated 3 October 2019), both part of the cluster of UP sites added in 2019-20.
- (a)1 and 3 — Rudrasagar Lake is correctly identified as being outside Uttar Pradesh, but Sarsai Nawar Jheel is not — it is a shallow wetland in Etawah district of UP, best known as a breeding ground for the sarus crane, and it was declared a Ramsar site in September 2019.
- (b)2 and 3 — Rudrasagar is right, but Samaspur Bird Sanctuary is very much in Uttar Pradesh — it lies in Rae Bareli district and was designated under the Ramsar Convention in October 2019, in the same batch that took UP from one Ramsar site to seven.
- (d)1 and 2 — This picks the only two options that ARE in Uttar Pradesh. Sarsai Nawar Jheel (Etawah) and Samaspur Bird Sanctuary (Rae Bareli) are both UP Ramsar sites, so neither can belong in the answer to a question asking which are NOT in the State.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, signed at Ramsar in Iran on 2 February 1971, commits parties to designate and wisely use wetlands of international importance. India acceded in 1982 with Chilika Lake (Odisha) and Keoladeo National Park (Rajasthan), and the network has expanded very fast since 2019, crossing 85 sites by 2025. Uttar Pradesh went from a single site (Upper Ganga River, 2005) to ten, gaining six in 2019-20 alone — Nawabganj, Parvati Arga, Saman, Samaspur, Sandi and Sarsai Nawar — followed by Sur Sarovar or Keetham (2020), Bakhira (June 2021) and Haiderpur (December 2021).
UPPSC has a settled habit of testing the Uttar Pradesh Ramsar roster in the negative — asking which named site is NOT in the State — and the distractors are always chosen so that the name sounds plausibly local. Here the giveaway is Sultanpur National Park: Sultanpur is a well-known eastern UP district, so a candidate who is matching on the name alone will keep it in UP and rule it out of the answer. The defence is to memorise the ten UP sites as a positive list, so that anything not on that list is automatically an outsider, rather than trying to judge each unfamiliar name on its sound.
- Rudrasagar Lake (Twijilikma) is in Tripura — Ramsar site since 8 November 2005; the Neermahal water palace stands on it
- Sultanpur National Park is in Gurugram district, Haryana — Ramsar site since 25 May 2021; Sultanpur is separately the name of a district in Uttar Pradesh
- Sarsai Nawar Jheel, Etawah district, UP — designated 19 September 2019; a stronghold of the sarus crane
- Samaspur Bird Sanctuary, Rae Bareli district, UP — designated 3 October 2019
- Uttar Pradesh has ten Ramsar sites, from Upper Ganga River (2005) through the 2019-20 batch to Sur Sarovar (2020), Bakhira (June 2021) and Haiderpur (December 2021)

- Reading 'Sultanpur National Park' as the UP district of Sultanpur — the park is in Gurugram, Haryana
- Assuming any lake with a Sanskritic name such as Rudrasagar must be in the Hindi belt; it is in Tripura
- Answering a NOT question by ticking the sites you recognise as UP wetlands instead of the ones that are not
UPPSC asks this as a negative locator — which Ramsar site is NOT in Uttar Pradesh — recycled almost verbatim across cycles; UPSC prefers wetland-to-location pairs across several States and asks how many pairs are correctly matched.
Consider the following pairs: Wetland/Lake — Location 1. Hokera Wetland — Punjab 2. Renuka Wetland — Himachal Pradesh 3. Rudrasagar Lake — Tripura 4. Sasthamkotta Lake — Tamil Nadu How many pairs given above are correctly matched?
- (a) Only one pair
- (b) Only two pairs
- (c) Only three pairs
- (d) All four pairs
Answer(b) Only two pairs
UPSC has already tested the exact pair that decides this question — Rudrasagar Lake with Tripura is one of the two correctly matched pairs in its key. The same paper's wrong pairs (Hokera in J&K, not Punjab; Sasthamkotta in Kerala, not Tamil Nadu) are built on the identical name-versus-place confusion.
Which of the following Ramsar site is NOT situated in Uttar Pradesh?
- (a) Sur Sarovar
- (b) Samaspur Bird Sanctuary
- (c) Sansai Nawar Jheel
- (d) Surinsar-Mansar Lakes
Answer(d) Surinsar-Mansar Lakes
The same question four years earlier, in single-answer form: which Ramsar site is NOT in Uttar Pradesh. Both papers keep Samaspur Bird Sanctuary and Sarsai Nawar Jheel on the list as the genuine UP sites, and both hang the answer on an outsider — Surinsar-Mansar in Jammu then, Rudrasagar and Sultanpur National Park now.
How many more 'Ramsar Sites' were added to Uttar Pradesh in January, 2020 ?
- (a) 3
- (b) 6
- (c) 9
- (d) 12
Answer(b) 6
The counting version of the same roster — how many Ramsar sites Uttar Pradesh gained in January 2020. That batch is exactly where Samaspur and Sarsai Nawar entered the list, so knowing it answers the positive half of this question.

- (b)Uttar Pradesh
- (c)Uttarakhand
- (d)Haryana
