Consider the following statements on World Championship swimming events (50 m pool): 1) Men and women compete in identical freestyle distances from 50 m to 1500 m. 2) Individual Medley is held only up to 400 m for both genders. Which of the above statements is/are correct?
- (a)Only 1 is Correct
- (b)Only 2 is Correct
- (c)1 and 2 are correct
- (d)Neither 1 nor 2 are Correct
Answer
Why
Correct — C. Statement 1 is true. At the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, men and women both swam the 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 m freestyle.
Statement 2 is true. The 50 m pool programme held the individual medley at 200 m and 400 m only, for both genders. The 100 m IM belongs to short-course (25 m) championships → option (c).
Why the others are wrong
- (a)Only 1 is Correct — Statement 2 is also true. In a 50 m pool the medley stops at 400 m. The 100 m IM is swum at the short-course (25 m) Worlds, as at Budapest 2024.
- (b)Only 2 is Correct — Statement 1 is also true. Men swim the 800 m and women the 1500 m at the Worlds, so both freestyle lists run from 50 to 1500 m.
- (d)Neither 1 nor 2 are Correct — Both statements hold for Singapore 2025: identical freestyle lists for men and women, and individual medley at 200 m and 400 m only.
Concept
World Aquatics runs two swimming world championships: the long-course World Aquatics Championships in a 50 m pool, and the short-course World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25 m).
At Singapore 2025 the long-course programme gave men and women identical individual events: freestyle from 50 to 1500 m, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly at 50, 100 and 200 m, and individual medley at 200 and 400 m.
The Olympics first matched the two freestyle lists at Tokyo 2020, which added the men's 800 m and the women's 1500 m. Olympic memory from before then can make statement 1 look false.

Common traps
- Carrying the pre-Tokyo Olympic programme over to the Worlds and marking statement 1 false.
- Counting the 100 m individual medley, a short-course event, and marking statement 2 false.
Here the event programme is tested as two statements, and each must hold for men and women alike.
