Which Indian political leader was conferred Namibia's highest civilian award during his first state visit to the country?
- (a)Ram Nath Kovind
- (b)Amit Shah
- (c)Narendra Modi
- (d)S. Jaishankar
Answer
Why
Correct — C. On 9 July 2025, in Windhoek, Namibia's President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah conferred the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, Namibia's highest civilian award, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It came on his first visit to Namibia, the same day he addressed the Namibian Parliament → option (c).
Why the others are wrong
- (a)Ram Nath Kovind — Ram Nath Kovind was President of India from 2017 to 2022. The Namibian award of July 2025 went to the sitting Prime Minister.
- (b)Amit Shah — Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, was not the honouree. President Nandi-Ndaitwah presented the award to Narendra Modi in Windhoek.
- (d)S. Jaishankar — S. Jaishankar, as External Affairs Minister, is a tempting guess for a foreign honour. The Welwitschia Mirabilis award of 9 July 2025 went to the Prime Minister.
Concept
The Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis was established in 1995, five years after Namibia's independence in 1990. It takes its name from the Welwitschia mirabilis, a desert plant.
Modi received it on a visit that also included talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah and an address to Namibia's Parliament.
The day before, on 8 July 2025, Brazil had given him its own highest honour.
India and Namibia also share Project Cheetah: eight cheetahs from Namibia were brought to Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh, on 17 September 2022.

Common traps
- Choosing S. Jaishankar because foreign honours feel like diplomatic business. This one was conferred on the Prime Minister.
- Mixing up the July 2025 honours: Brazil's Grand Collar of the Order of the Southern Cross came on 8 July, Namibia's Welwitschia Mirabilis on 9 July.
Foreign honours are current-affairs items tied to a single visit, so learn the award, the country and the date together.
