Why the others are wrong
- (b)Option (b) is 1, the value of the square bracket. That is a real intermediate step, but the 9 ÷ in front of it has not been carried out yet.
- (c)Option (c), 9⁄5, is what ignoring the bar gives: 5⁄6 − 1⁄3 + 1⁄2 read left to right is 1, then 4 × 1 = 4, 1 + 4 = 5 and 9 ÷ 5.

Work outward one bracket at a time — round, then curly, then square — and write each value down rather than holding it in your head.
