Select the correct mirror image of the given figure when the mirror is placed at MN as shown below.

Why

Correct — B. MN is drawn as a vertical line to the right of the text, so the image is a left-right flip and nothing moves up or down.

Rule: reverse the order of the characters, and laterally invert each character.

The figure reads 4 6 K m E. Reversed, that is E m K 6 4, with every glyph turned back to front.

Option (b) shows exactly that: a back-to-front E, an m whose arches are still at the top, a reversed K, a reversed 6 and a reversed 4.

Why the others are wrong

(a)
The order and the flip are right, but its m is upside down — the arches sit at the bottom. A vertical mirror never exchanges top and bottom.
(c)
The 6 and the K are printed the normal way round while the E and the 4 are reversed. A mirror inverts every character or none of them.
(d)
The order is reversed, but the E and the 4 are printed the normal way round, so only some of the characters have actually been flipped.

Concept

A mirror drawn as a vertical line produces lateral inversion: left and right swap, top and bottom do not.

Two things change together — the order of the characters reverses, and each character is flipped back to front.

Wrong options are usually built by breaking exactly one of the two, or by flipping the whole strip top-to-bottom, which is a water image and not a mirror image.

Watch the characters that give the answer away. Symmetric glyphs such as m, o and A look unchanged; asymmetric ones such as 4, 6, E and K carry all the evidence.

Compare the option strips character by character. Each wrong option is correct for most of its glyphs, so a glance at the first character alone settles nothing.

Key facts

A vertical mirror swaps left and right only, leaving top and bottom untouched.
A horizontal mirror line gives a water image instead, and E, C, D and H survive that unchanged.
Capitals with a vertical axis of symmetry — A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y — look identical in a vertical mirror.
Of the digits, 0 and 8 are the ones that come back from a vertical mirror unchanged.
