Why

Correct — D. VD Savarkar was tried in Bombay for his part in the Nashik conspiracy and sentenced to two terms of transportation for life, and he was shipped to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans in 1911.

He was held there for about a decade before being brought back to a mainland prison at Ratnagiri in 1921.

The year asked for is the year of transportation, which is neither the year of his arrest nor the year of his removal from the islands → option (d).

Why the others are wrong

1923 — By 1923 he had already been off the islands for two years, held on the mainland. That year belongs to his writing rather than to any sentence of transportation.

1922 — 1922 also falls inside the mainland phase that began with the transfer to Ratnagiri, so nothing about the Andamans sentence attaches to it.

1910 — 1910 is the year of the arrest in London and of the celebrated escape attempt at Marseilles. The Bombay trial and the sentence followed, and only then came the voyage to Port Blair.

Concept

The Cellular Jail at Port Blair, completed in 1906, was where the British sent political prisoners they wanted removed from India altogether — the punishment known as kala pani.

Savarkar reached it in 1911 under two life sentences arising from the Nashik conspiracy case, and found his elder brother Ganesh already a prisoner there.

He was transferred to Ratnagiri in 1921, and the Andamans phase of his life ends there. The jail is now a national memorial, and the roll of revolutionaries held in it is a standard source of exam questions.

This question turns on which event a year belongs to. Savarkar's chronology has three candidate years close together, and only one of them is the transportation.
