Simuka is named as the first ruler of the Satavahana line, the dynasty that ruled the Deccan from Maharashtra's own heartland and left its earliest epigraphic traces in the state. He appears at the head of the Satavahana list in the Puranas, where the dynasty is usually called Andhra or Andhra-Satavahana, and he is depicted among the royal figures in the cave inscription at Naneghat, in the Junnar hills north of Pune — a pass on the trade route from the Konkan coast to the Deccan plateau, and one of the reasons this dynasty could tax and profit from western India's commerce. Puranic tradition credits Simuka with destroying what remained of the Kanva power, which places the Satavahana rise at the end of the sequence Maurya–Sunga–Kanva, though the absolute chronology of Simuka's reign is genuinely disputed among historians and the standard textbooks differ by more than a century.
