Where this paper and its answers come from

SSC does not publish CGL question papers or a public answer key. From 2025 the candidate response sheet prints every question and option as a picture, so the text here is transcribed from those pictures for this shift and checked against them independently; where the layout carries meaning, the picture is shown as well. Each answer is the key SSC colour-marked on that sheet. SSC released a tentative key for challenge and later its final one, both only to candidates behind a login, and the sheet does not say which of the two it carries. Why

Correct — D. Talcher is a coal town in Angul district, Odisha, on the Talcher coalfield now worked by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. NTPC's Talcher Thermal Power Station burned that coal until it closed on 31 March 2021.

The larger Talcher Super Thermal Power Station at Kaniha is in the same district → option (d).

Why the others are wrong

Jharkhand — Jharkhand has its own coal-fired stations, such as Patratu and Bokaro. Talcher's coal comes from Odisha's Mahanadi Coalfields, not from Jharkhand's Damodar valley fields.

Tamil Nadu — Tamil Nadu's best-known thermal station is Neyveli, which burns lignite. Talcher is in Odisha's Angul district.

Andhra Pradesh — Andhra Pradesh hosts NTPC's Simhadri station near Visakhapatnam. Talcher is in Odisha, not Andhra Pradesh.

Concept

A pithead power plant burns coal mined next door, which saves hauling it across the country. Talcher sits on the Talcher coalfield in the Brahmani basin of Odisha, worked by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a Coal India subsidiary.

That is why NTPC built coal-fired capacity there. The super thermal station at Kaniha is also the starting point of the Talcher–Kolar HVDC link, which carries power to Kolar in Karnataka.

Two NTPC plants carry the Talcher name: the older Talcher Thermal Power Station, closed on 31 March 2021, and the Talcher Super Thermal Power Station at Kaniha. Both are in Angul district, so either reading gives Odisha.
