Concept
A pithead power plant burns coal mined next door, which saves hauling it across the country. Talcher sits on the Talcher coalfield in the Brahmani basin of Odisha, worked by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, a Coal India subsidiary.
That is why NTPC built coal-fired capacity there. The super thermal station at Kaniha is also the starting point of the Talcher–Kolar HVDC link, which carries power to Kolar in Karnataka.
Two NTPC plants carry the Talcher name: the older Talcher Thermal Power Station, closed on 31 March 2021, and the Talcher Super Thermal Power Station at Kaniha. Both are in Angul district, so either reading gives Odisha.
