Which newly designated Ramsar Site is recognized for hosting the largest population of Sarus Cranes in India?
- (a)Sarsai Nawar Wetland, UP
- (b)Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan
- (c)Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat
- (d)Harike Wetland, Punjab
Answer
Why
Correct — A. Sarsai Nawar Jheel, a permanent marsh in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh, was designated a Ramsar site on 19 September 2019, the most recent of the four options.
Its Ramsar summary says the site is named after the sarus crane and records a population of 400, the largest flock in the region. That is option (a).
Why the others are wrong
- (b)Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan — Keoladeo is no new designation. It became one of India's first two Ramsar sites, with Chilika Lake, on 1 October 1981.
- (c)Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat — Nalsarovar in Gujarat became a Ramsar site on 24 September 2012, seven years before Sarsai Nawar. Sarus cranes shelter there in summer, but the site is not named for them.
- (d)Harike Wetland, Punjab — Harike in Punjab has been a Ramsar site since 23 March 1990, and its listing highlights ducks and geese on migration rather than sarus cranes.
Concept
A Ramsar site is a wetland listed as internationally important under the Convention on Wetlands, signed at Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
Sarsai Nawar is a permanent marsh of about 161 hectares, fed by monsoon run-off, with farming across most of the site. The sarus, a vulnerable species, lives there in numbers.
The nearby Hajari Mahadev temple draws thousands of pilgrims each year. The sarus crane is also Uttar Pradesh's state bird.
The Ramsar summary's claim is narrower than the stem's: the largest flock in the region, not the largest population in India. And newly designated here means 2019.
The key still fits, because Sarsai Nawar is the most recent designation among the options and the one named for the sarus.

Common traps
- Choosing Keoladeo for its fame as a bird sanctuary, when it has been a Ramsar site since 1981.
- Ignoring the word newly: Keoladeo (1981), Harike (1990) and Nalsarovar (2012) were all designated before Sarsai Nawar (2019).
