Why

Correct — D. India won the first men's Asian Champions Trophy, played at Ordos in China in September 2011.

Six teams took part, drawn from the top finishers at the 2010 Asian Games. The final against Pakistan ended goalless through regulation and extra time, and India took the penalty shoot-out 4-2, captained by Rajpal Singh.

That inaugural title is option (d).

Why the others are wrong

Japan — Japan was in the six-team field but has not won the men's Asian Champions Trophy. Its big continental result of recent years is the 2018 Asian Games gold in Jakarta.

China — China hosted that first edition at Ordos, which is the association most candidates make. Hosting is not winning, and China has not taken the men's title.

Pakistan — Pakistan reached that first final and lost the shoot-out. It won the next two editions, in 2012 and 2013, which makes it the strongest decoy on the page.

Concept

The Asian Champions Trophy is an invitational for the continent's leading hockey sides, started by the Asian Hockey Federation in 2011 with six teams.

India won that first edition at Ordos and has been the most successful side in the event since. Pakistan took the 2012 and 2013 titles and shared the 2018 edition with India after the final was rained off, and South Korea won at Dhaka in 2021.

Read the stem carefully. It says Asian Hockey Championship, but the tournament it describes — a men's Asian trophy with a first edition — is the Asian Champions Trophy.

The paper's phrase 'Asian Hockey Championship' is loose, but it still resolves: the word trophy points at the Asian Champions Trophy, whose inaugural edition India won in 2011. SSC's key is sound.

That looseness is what the Pakistan decoy trades on. Pakistan won the first men's Hockey Asia Cup, at Karachi in 1982 — a different tournament, and one that is not called the Asian Hockey Championship.
