Why

Correct — D. The first Indian Olympic Games were staged at Lahore, then the capital of undivided Punjab and today in Pakistan.

They were an all-India meet of the 1920s, from the years of the provisional All India Olympic Committee formed in 1923–24 — the body that became the Indian Olympic Association in 1927.

That Lahore meet is the ancestor of what later became India's National Games.

Read the stem closely: it asks about the Indian Olympic Games, a domestic championship, not about an Olympic Games held in India.

Why the others are wrong

(a)
Bombay — Bombay is the reflex guess for almost any early Indian first, but the meet was a Punjab affair. The venue was Lahore.
(b)
Allahabad — Wrong city. Allahabad was in the United Provinces, and the first edition of these games was held at Lahore, in Punjab.
(c)
Madras — Wrong presidency. Madras lay at the other end of the country from the venue, which was Lahore in the north-west.

Concept

Organised sport in colonial India was provincial before it was national. Provincial and inter-provincial meets came first, and the all-India championship staged at Lahore was the attempt to pull them into one event.

Institutions followed the competition. The Indian Olympic Association was formed in 1927 to select and send teams abroad, and the domestic meet grew into the National Games.

India's Olympic record starts earlier than either. The country was represented at the Paris Games of 1900 by a single athlete, Norman Pritchard, who won two silver medals in athletics.

The phrase 'Indian Olympic Games' means the domestic all-India meet, not an Olympics hosted in India. India has never hosted the Olympic Games, so no option here could have meant that.
