Which of the four options will replace the question mark (?) in the following series? FX32, EV38, DT44, CR50, ?
- (a)BP56
- (b)CR54
- (c)DP55
- (d)CQ55
Answer
Why
Correct — A. Each term has three independent parts, so track them one at a time.
First letters: F, E, D, C — one step back each time → B.
Second letters: X, V, T, R — two steps back each time → P.
Numbers: 32, 38, 44, 50 — +6 each time → 56.
Reassembling the three parts gives BP56 → option (a).
Why the others are wrong
- (b)CR54 — CR54 repeats the fourth term's letters CR untouched and adds 4 rather than 6. Both letters have to move on.
- (c)DP55 — P is the right second letter, but the first letter must fall back to B — C moves one step back, it does not rise to D. The 55 is also a step of 5.
- (d)CQ55 — C repeats the fourth term's first letter instead of falling back to B, Q is one step from R rather than two, and 55 is a +5 step.
Concept
Mixed letter-number series are three small series printed side by side. Solve them separately, then reassemble the answer.
Write the alphabet positions out. F=6, E=5, D=4, C=3 is a plain −1, and X=24, V=22, T=20, R=18 is a plain −2. Neither column wraps past A here, so no modular arithmetic is needed.
The number part is ordinary arithmetic: 32, 38, 44, 50, each step +6.
Options (b) and (d) each keep a letter from CR50 unchanged. That is the usual way these options are built — move two of the three parts correctly and leave the third where it was.
Key facts
- Alphabet positions: F=6, E=5, D=4, C=3, B=2.
- Alphabet positions: X=24, V=22, T=20, R=18, P=16.
- The number part runs 32, 38, 44, 50, 56 — a constant +6.

Common traps
- Moving both letters at the same rate, which gives BQ at −1 each or AP at −2 each rather than BP
- Adding 4 or 5 to 50 instead of the constant 6
- Reading X, V, T, R forwards and expecting T to follow R
SSC sets mixed letter-number series alongside pure ones. On 26 Sep 2024, 12:30 a pure letter-cluster series is at Reasoning Q.23 and a pure number series at Q.20.
