Why

Correct — A. Jaipal Singh Munda captained India's hockey team at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, the Games at which India won its first Olympic hockey gold.

He learnt the game in India, at St Paul's School in Ranchi, and went to England later, reading Economics at St John's College, Oxford.

He is remembered today mostly for what came after — a member of the Constituent Assembly who argued there for Adivasi interests — but the sport the question wants is hockey, option (a).

Why the others are wrong

Kabaddi — Kabaddi has no link to him. His international appearance was at the 1928 Olympics, and kabaddi has never been an Olympic medal sport.

Cricket — Cricket was not his game, and it was not on the 1928 Olympic programme either. His Oxford years are what make this the tempting wrong answer.

Badminton — Badminton only became an Olympic medal sport at Barcelona in 1992, six decades after the Games Jaipal Singh Munda played in.

Jaipal Singh Munda sits in two parts of the General Awareness syllabus at once, and SSC asks him from both.

In sport, he captained the Indian hockey team at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics — India's first Olympic hockey gold and the start of the run that made Indian hockey famous.

In polity and modern history, he was a member of the Constituent Assembly, where he spoke for Adivasi representation, and he led the Adivasi Mahasabha, the organisation that grew into the Jharkhand Party.

Person-to-sport items are pure recall, so the only defence is a stocked memory rather than elimination.

This particular name is worth holding twice over, because a polity paper can ask it as a Constituent Assembly question on another day.
