In 1936, The Independent Labour Party was founded by _______.
- (a)BR Ambedkar
- (b)Bhagat Singh
- (c)Bal Gangadhar Tilak
- (d)Mohan Singh Bhakhna
Answer
Why
Correct — A. B. R. Ambedkar founded the Independent Labour Party in 1936, at Bombay, to contest the provincial elections held under the Government of India Act, 1935.
It was his first electoral vehicle. The party fought the 1937 Bombay Presidency elections on a programme joining the interests of industrial labour to those of the Depressed Classes, and won seats in the provincial legislature.
Ambedkar wound it up in favour of the All India Scheduled Castes Federation in 1942, and the Republican Party of India was formed on his plan after his death. Option (a) is the name on this list attached to a party of 1936.
Why the others are wrong
- (b)Bhagat Singh — Bhagat Singh was executed in 1931, five years before this party existed. His organisations were the Naujawan Bharat Sabha of 1926 and the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association of 1928.
- (c)Bal Gangadhar Tilak — Tilak died in 1920 and so founded nothing in 1936. He is associated with the Home Rule League, which he and Annie Besant ran as two branches from 1916.
- (d)Mohan Singh Bhakhna — The paper's Mohan Singh Bhakhna — more usually Sohan Singh Bhakna — was the Ghadar Party's first president. The party was founded among Indian emigrants in the United States in 1913, not an electoral party of 1936.
Concept
Ambedkar's political organisations came in a sequence, and SSC tests the order of it.
The Independent Labour Party (1936) was founded at Bombay to fight the first elections held under the Government of India Act, 1935, combining the demands of industrial labour with those of the Depressed Classes.
The All India Scheduled Castes Federation (1942) replaced it with a narrower, explicitly caste-based platform.
The Republican Party of India was the body he planned at the end of his life and which his followers formed after his death in 1956.
The year is the whole discriminator here. Two of the other three names had died before 1936, so they can be struck out without knowing anything about their politics.
