Select the correct mirror image of the given figure when the mirror is placed at MN as shown below.

Why

Correct — A. Rule: a vertical mirror at MN reverses the order of the characters and flips each one left to right.

The line reads h G D 4 3 2 with MN standing to its right, so the character nearest the mirror appears first: the image reads 2 3 4 D G h.

Each character must also be laterally inverted — the 2 and the 3 face the other way, the 4's flag points left, the D's bowl opens leftward, the G's opening faces left, and the h keeps its tall stroke at the right with the arch at the top.

Option (a) is the one where all six are both reversed in order and inverted in shape.

Why the others are wrong

The order is right, but the 3 and the G stand un-inverted — both are printed exactly as they appear in the given line.
(c)
Everything is inverted except the h, which is flipped top to bottom: its arch sits at the foot and the tall stroke runs downward. That is a water image, not a mirror image.
(d)
The order is right, but the 2 and the D stand un-inverted, printed just as they appear in the given figure.

Concept

A mirror drawn vertically at MN does two things at once, and both have to be checked.

The sequence reverses, because the character closest to the mirror is the one reflected nearest the front. So h G D 4 3 2 becomes 2 3 4 D G h.

Each character is then flipped about a vertical axis. Characters with no vertical axis of symmetry — 2, 3, 4, D, G and h here — all change shape, and an option that leaves any one of them alone is wrong however right the order looks.

The h is the character to test first. Its water image — arch at the foot, tall stroke running downward — is unmistakable beside its mirror image, and option (c) is built on exactly that swap.

Key facts

MN drawn as a vertical line means a mirror image, and the character closest to the mirror comes first in the reflection.
A left-right flip changes 2, 3, 4, D, G and h, none of which has a vertical axis of symmetry.
In a correct mirror image of h the tall stroke stays full height with the arch at the top, moving to the left of the stroke.

Common traps

Checking that the order is reversed and marking the first such option without inspecting each character.
Confusing the mirror image with the water image, which flips top to bottom and leaves the order alone.
Assuming digits survive a mirror unchanged, when only characters with a vertical axis of symmetry do.

The options differ by only a character or two, so the fast route is to fix on the most asymmetric character — the h here — and eliminate on it. Reasoning Q.15 of this shift also turns on orientation, though by rotation rather than reflection.
