Why the others are wrong
- (b)95 — 95 is 94.5 rounded up, and it is also what you get by dropping Computer's 92: 475 ⁄ 5 = 95. All six rows count, and 567 ⁄ 6 does not land on a whole number.
- (c)96 — 96 needs a total of 576, nine marks more than the table carries. Recheck the addition rather than the division — 567 is the figure the six rows give.
- (d)92.5 — 92.5 needs a total of 555, twelve marks below the table's 567. The six printed rows are 98, 97, 93, 94, 92 and 93, and no reading of them adds to 555.

The average of a plain list is the total divided by the number of entries — here six subjects, so six entries.
The 'maximum marks 100' line matters only if a percentage is wanted. For the average mark it changes nothing: 567 ⁄ 6 = 94.5 whether the papers are out of 100 or out of 50.
Add in two groups of three rather than one long chain. The intermediate totals 288 and 279 are quick to re-verify if the final figure looks wrong.
