Select the correct mirror image of the given figure when the mirror is placed at MN as shown below.

Why

Correct — D. MN is drawn as a vertical line to the right of the string, so the image is a left-to-right flip.

Rule: the order of the characters reverses, and every character is itself laterally inverted.

R f 4 d 2 m read backwards is m, 2, d, 4, f, R.

Now invert each one: m is unchanged, being symmetrical about a vertical axis; 2 turns into a backwards 2; d becomes b; the 4 and the f both face the other way; and R becomes a reversed R.

That is exactly the string option (d) prints, with the reversed R standing at the far right.

Why the others are wrong

(a)
This is the string turned through 180 degrees — every character is upside down. A vertical mirror flips left to right and leaves the characters standing the right way up.
(b)
The f and the 4 face the way they do in the question, and the d has become p rather than b. A vertical mirror reverses every character, so an f still opening to the right cannot belong to the image.
(c)
The R stands normally, and so does the 2. In a vertical mirror R becomes a backwards R — the two characters that look untouched are what give this option away.

Concept

A mirror placed at MN reflects the figure across the line MN. A vertical MN gives the left-right image; a horizontal MN gives the water image, flipped top to bottom.

A left-right flip does two things at once, and the options are built to break one of them: the order reverses and each character reverses. Check both.

The quick route is to find a character whose mirror is a different, nameable shape. Here d becomes b and R becomes a backwards R, so any option that leaves them as printed is out.

m looks unchanged in a vertical mirror because it is symmetrical about a vertical axis, and among the digits 0 and 8 behave the same way. Characters like these settle nothing, so test on the others.

Common traps

Reversing the order of the characters and forgetting to reverse the characters themselves.
Reversing each character but leaving them in the order the question prints them.
Accepting an option on its first two characters, which are m and a backwards 2 in more than one of them.

A left-right flip also decides the picture series at Reasoning Q.20 of this shift, where a mark carries into the next box mirrored. Both items reward checking a character whose mirror is a different shape.
