Correct — D. The Pro Kabaddi League played its first season in 2014, with eight franchise teams.

It was built on the model the Indian Premier League had proved in cricket: city franchises, a player auction and a television contract. It is now the sport's principal professional competition in India.

Why the others are wrong

2007 — 2007 is the year the Indian Premier League was founded. The confusion is fair, since PKL copied its franchise model, but the kabaddi league came seven years later.

Concept

Kabaddi is an old Indian contact sport that had national and Asian-level competition long before it had a professional league.

The Pro Kabaddi League, launched in 2014, gave the sport a franchise structure: city teams, an auction and a broadcast deal.

Play itself is unchanged. Seven players a side, a raider who must cross into the opposing half and return without being held.

Kabaddi's international calendar is older than the league. The first Asian Kabaddi Championship was held in 1980 and the first Kabaddi World Cup in 2004, at Mumbai.
