Why

Correct — C. Prabha Atre sang in the Kirana gharana. She trained under Sureshbabu Mane and Hirabai Barodekar, both singers of the Kirana line that Abdul Karim Khan made famous.

Her Padma awards run Padma Shri in 1990, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2022, the award the stem names.

Why the others are wrong

Agra gharana — The Agra gharana is the dhrupad-influenced, forceful khayal school whose best-known voice is Faiyaz Khan. Prabha Atre did not train in it.

Mewati gharana — The Mewati gharana is the line associated with Pandit Jasraj, not with Prabha Atre.

Indore gharana — The Indore gharana was founded by Ustad Amir Khan. Prabha Atre's teachers were Kirana singers instead.

Concept

A gharana is a lineage of teaching in Hindustani music, a stylistic school handed down guru to shishya and usually named after the town where it took shape.

Kirana takes its name from Kairana in Uttar Pradesh. Its signature is unhurried, held notes and exact intonation.

Abdul Karim Khan gave the school its shape, and Sawai Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal and Hirabai Barodekar carried it on.

Prabha Atre lived from 1932 to 2024 and was a scholar as well as a performer, heading the music department at SNDT Women's University in Mumbai.
