Concept

For that equation to hold, the container must interfere as little as it can. Hence the standard design — a thin copper vessel with a copper stirrer, standing on an insulating pad inside an outer jacket, with a lid and a thermometer through it.
A metal that conducts fast and stores little makes the vessel a quick, nearly invisible participant in the exchange.
The vessel is never quite invisible, and physics has a number for the residue: the water equivalent of the calorimeter.
That is the mass of water which would absorb the same heat for the same rise in temperature, and it is how the vessel's own share is carried into the heat balance.
