Before Lavoisier, chemists explained burning with phlogiston, a weightless substance a burning body was supposed to give off.

Conservation of mass follows directly. It is why a chemical equation has to be balanced — the same atoms stand on both sides and only their arrangement changes.
Mikhail Lomonosov had stated a mass-conservation principle in Russia decades earlier. The exam wants the standard attribution, and the question pins it with a year: 1789 points at Lavoisier's treatise.
