Why

Correct — A. The Shevaroy hills rise in the Salem region of Tamil Nadu and are counted with the Eastern Ghats — the hill station of Yercaud sits on them.

The Eastern Ghats are a broken chain running from Odisha through Andhra Pradesh into Tamil Nadu, cut by the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri on their way to the Bay of Bengal.

The three other hills named belong to the Western Ghats or to the northeast, so option (a) is the Eastern Ghats hill.

Why the others are wrong

Khasi hills — Khasi hills are in Meghalaya, on the Meghalaya plateau in the northeast. They are no part of either Ghat.

Anamudi hills — Anamudi is the highest peak of the Western Ghats, in the Anaimalai hills of Kerala, on the western side of the peninsula. The question asks for the eastern chain.
(d)
Naga hills — Naga hills belong to the Purvanchal ranges of the northeast, an extension of the Himalayan system rather than of the peninsular Ghats.

Concept

The Eastern Ghats are discontinuous, and that one word answers most questions about them.

Because the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri cut through them, they survive as detached hill groups rather than a single wall — Mahendragiri and the Nallamala range to the north, the Javadi and Shevaroy hills in Tamil Nadu.

The Western Ghats, by contrast, are continuous and higher, and carry the peninsula's highest peak, Anamudi. The two chains meet in the Nilgiris.

Height is a quick check when a name is unfamiliar: the Eastern Ghats are the lower chain, so a peak famous for its height is far more likely to be a Western Ghats name.
