Which of the following events took place in the United Provinces in February, 1922?
- (a)Chauri Chaura
- (b)Quit India
- (c)Kakori Incident
- (d)Khilafat Movement
Answer
Why
Correct — A. On 4 February 1922 a crowd at Chauri Chaura, in the Gorakhpur district of the United Provinces, set fire to a police station and the policemen inside were killed.
Gandhi held that a movement resting on non-violence could not continue past that. Meeting at Bardoli in February 1922, the Congress Working Committee suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement.
Month, province and event line up for one choice only → option (a).
Why the others are wrong
- (b)Quit India — Quit India was launched in August 1942, from the Congress session in Bombay. It is twenty years and one province away from what the question describes.
- (c)Kakori Incident — The Kakori train action did take place in the United Provinces, which is what makes it tempting, but on 9 August 1925. The province matches and the date does not.
- (d)Khilafat Movement — The Khilafat movement was a campaign, not a single event. It ran across India from 1919 and cannot be placed in one province in one month.
Concept
Non-Cooperation, 1920 to 1922, was the first all-India mass satyagraha, and Gandhi attached a condition to it: the moment it turned violent, it would stop.
Chauri Chaura tested that condition. A procession clashed with the police, the crowd burned the police station, and lives were lost.
Gandhi withdrew the movement, and many Congress leaders opposed the decision bitterly. Motilal Nehru and C.R. Das were among them, and they went on to found the Swaraj Party. The withdrawal is the hinge between the Non-Cooperation years and the council-entry politics that followed.
The paper says United Provinces, the name the province carried before 1950. Chauri Chaura lies in what is now the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, so do not look for a separate province on the map.

Common traps
- Choosing Kakori because it also happened in the United Provinces, forgetting that it belongs to 1925.
- Dating the withdrawal of Non-Cooperation to 1921 instead of February 1922.
