Anna Chandy, the first Indian woman to serve as a judge at a high court was oppointed in which High Court?

Why

Correct — B. Anna Chandy was elevated to the Kerala High Court in 1959, becoming the first woman in India to sit as a High Court judge.

Her whole career runs through Travancore and then Kerala. She had entered the Travancore judicial service in the 1930s, the first Indian woman to hold judicial office.

That is why the answer is the High Court of that state — option (b).

Why the others are wrong

(a)
Tamil Nadu — There is no Tamil Nadu High Court. The court for that state is the Madras High Court, one of the three set up in 1862, and Anna Chandy never served there.
(c)
West Bengal — The court in West Bengal is the Calcutta High Court, the oldest in India and also established in 1862, but not the court of India's first woman High Court judge.
(d)
Andhra Pradesh — The Andhra Pradesh High Court has no connection with Anna Chandy, and the present court at Amaravati was constituted only in 2019.

Concept

Anna Chandy (1905-1996) qualified in law in Travancore and practised before joining the judiciary there.

Her appointment to the Kerala High Court in 1959 made her the first woman High Court judge in India, three decades before a woman reached the Supreme Court.

The two firsts are worth learning together: M Fathima Beevi, also from Kerala, became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1989.

The stem's oppointed is the paper's own typo, carried over from the response sheet. The question is otherwise straightforward, and the options are states rather than court names.
