In which of the following cities did Mahatma Gandhi lead the peasant movement against the imposed indigo cultivation by the British planters?

Why

Correct — D. Champaran, in Bihar, is where Gandhi took up the indigo cultivators' case in 1917, having been persuaded to come by Raj Kumar Shukla.

The grievance was the tinkathia system, under which planters bound tenants to grow indigo on a fixed share of their holding.

Gandhi's enquiry forced the government to appoint a committee, on which he served, and the system was ended by law — option (d).

Why the others are wrong

Gorakhpur — Gorakhpur district contains Chauri Chaura, where mob violence in February 1922 made Gandhi call off the Non-Cooperation Movement. It has no indigo connection.

Bardoli — Bardoli in Gujarat was a no-tax campaign against a land revenue increase, led in 1928 by Vallabhbhai Patel, who earned the title Sardar there.

Kheda — Kheda in Gujarat was also a peasant satyagraha, but in 1918 and over revenue remission after crop failure, not over a crop the planters forced on tenants.

Concept

Champaran, 1917 was Gandhi's first satyagraha in India, and it set the method he used afterwards: go to the place, take testimony from the people affected, refuse to leave when ordered out, and force an official enquiry.

The early peasant campaigns are asked as a set — Champaran (1917, indigo, Bihar), Kheda (1918, revenue remission, Gujarat) and Bardoli (1928, revenue increase, Gujarat).

Ahmedabad in 1918 belongs to the same period but was a mill workers' dispute, not a peasant movement.

The stem says cities. Champaran is a district of Bihar rather than a city, so reproduce the paper's wording when you revise from it but store the fact correctly.
