Why

Correct — A. The wicketkeeper is a cricket fielding position — the player who stands behind the stumps at the striker's end and takes the ball the batter misses.

The Laws of Cricket single the role out: the wicketkeeper is the only fielder allowed to wear gloves and external leg guards, and a stumping can be completed by nobody else.

The word itself decides it. A wicket — three stumps and two bails — exists in no other game listed, so option (a) is the only possible fit.

Why the others are wrong

(b)
Basketball — Basketball has no keeper at all. Its five positions are point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and centre, and the basket is defended by whoever is nearest, not by a specialist.
(c)
Hockey — Hockey's specialist behind the line is the goalkeeper, who guards a goal, not a wicket, and is the only player permitted full protective kit. The similar word is the trap.
(d)
Football — Football also has a goalkeeper — the only player who may handle the ball, and only inside his own penalty area. Same idea as hockey, and again not the term the question uses.

Concept

Sports questions in this format are decided by vocabulary, not by knowing the game. SSC gives a role name and asks which sport owns it.

Wicketkeeper belongs to cricket because the wicket does: three stumps topped by two bails, at each end of the pitch. The keeper fields behind the striker's wicket, and the dismissal that is his alone is the stumping — breaking the wicket while the batter is out of the crease and not attempting a run.

Hold the role names sport by sport and this whole family of questions turns into recall.

Common traps

Reading 'keeper' and reaching for hockey or football, which have goalkeepers.
Assuming any sport with a defender behind a line uses the same term for the role.
