Why

Correct — A. Gandhi's first satyagraha in India was at Champaran in Bihar in 1917, on behalf of indigo cultivators held to the tinkathia system by European planters. That is option (a).

All four places are Gandhian struggles, which makes this a date test rather than a name test. Ahmedabad, the mill workers' dispute, and Kheda, the peasants' demand for revenue remission, both fall in 1918. Bardoli is 1928 and was led by Vallabhbhai Patel.

Concept

Champaran, 1917 is where Gandhi's Indian career begins. Cultivators in the district were bound under the tinkathia system to plant indigo on a fixed share of their holding for European planters, on terms they could not refuse.

Gandhi went there at the urging of Rajkumar Shukla, a local cultivator, defied an order to leave the district, and forced the government to appoint an inquiry committee on which he himself served.

The tinkathia system was ended, and the method — local grievance, patient enquiry, refusal to leave — became the template.

Every option names a place where Gandhi or one of his lieutenants ran a satyagraha, so the year in the stem is doing all the work. Read the year before you read the options.
