Why

Correct — B. The name of the award settles it. Banga is the Bengali name for Bengal, and Banga Vibhushan is the highest civilian honour of the Government of West Bengal.

Pandit Anindo Chatterjee is a Kolkata-based tabla player, and it was that state government that honoured him in 2022. West Bengal runs a second tier of the same list, Banga Bhushan.

Why the others are wrong

Jharkhand — Banga names Bengal, not Jharkhand. Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000 and has no claim on a Bengali-named state honour.

Tripura — Tripura is the thoughtful wrong answer — Bengali is an official language there and the name sounds at home. But Banga Vibhushan is conferred by West Bengal, not Tripura.

Assam — Assam confers its own civilian honour, Assam Baibhav, under an Assamese name. A 'Banga' title points across the border to West Bengal.

Concept

Indian honours run on two levels, and SSC works the seam between them.

The Padma awards — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri — are national, conferred by the President.

Below them sit state civilian awards, each instituted by a state government and named in that state's own language: Banga Vibhushan and Banga Bhushan in West Bengal, Maharashtra Bhushan in Maharashtra.

The words 'Vibhushan' and 'Bhushan' appear in both families, so read who confers the award, not only what it is called.

The stem asks 'which government', not 'which award'. The answer is therefore a state, and the first half of the award's name is the entire clue.
