Correct — option (3), Shells of Mollusca. The word gives the answer to anyone who takes it apart: concha is the Latin for a shell, and the suffix -logy marks a field of study, so conchology is the study of shells. In practice the shells that are studied are almost entirely those of molluscs, because it is the molluscs — snails, mussels, oysters, clams, cowries, chitons and the nautilus among them — that build the hard external shell of calcium carbonate that the word describes. The question turns on a distinction that is genuinely made within zoology and is not a piece of examination pedantry. The study of molluscs as living animals, their anatomy, their classification, their habits and their distribution, is called malacology, from the Greek malakos meaning soft, a name that points at the soft body of the animal. Conchology is the narrower branch that concerns itself with the shell those animals secrete: its structure, its growth, its form, its markings and its use in identifying and classifying species.
