Correct — option (2), 'Only 2 is correct'. Take the two printed statements one at a time, since that is the only safe way through an item of this construction. Statement 1 says that a compact settlement is most probably surrounded by hamlets, and it fails because it attaches the defining property of one settlement type to another. In the standard classification of rural settlements by form, a compact or nucleated settlement is a single closely built cluster in which the houses stand together, often around a road junction, a temple or a tank, with the fields lying outside the built-up area. The village that is surrounded by outlying units is a different type entirely — the hamleted or fragmented settlement, in which the village has broken into several physically separate parts, a main site with a number of subsidiary hamlets around it, each often occupied by a distinct social or occupational group.
